Workers at the National Identification Authority (NIA) have confirmed plans to proceed with an indefinite strike from Wednesday, May 13, over delays in the approval and implementation of changes to their conditions of service, a union statement said.
The workers, operating under the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, directed members nationwide to stay away from work from midnight on Tuesday, May 12, until further notice.
“Effective 12:00 midnight, the indefinite strike is fully activated. Accordingly, no member of the NIA Division is expected to show up for work until further notice,” the statement, signed by Assistant Divisional Secretary Godsway Ayivor and Divisional Chairman Bismark Francis Bangfudem Nyuzaghl, said.
The union said the action was triggered by the failure to implement migration reports linked to staff conditions of service.
It instructed regional executives to form monitoring teams to ensure compliance across all NIA offices.
“All regional executives and members are also directed to form monitoring units, go round the various offices, and ensure full compliance with the strike without fail,” it said.
The union urged members experiencing difficulties during the industrial action to report to divisional executives for support, adding: “In solidarity, we stand. No retreat, no surrender until victory.”
The strike is expected to disrupt services at NIA offices nationwide, including the issuance and registration of Ghana Cards and other identification services.
The management of the NIA has meanwhile appealed to workers to allow an additional two weeks for government to complete processes related to the approval and implementation of the migration reports affecting staff conditions of service.
