The Governing Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has appointed Professor Christian Agyare as its new Vice-Chancellor.
He succeeds Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, who has led the institution since 2020 and is widely recognised for steering the university through a period of academic expansion and institutional strengthening.
The decision was taken at a council meeting held Wednesday 13th May 2026, bringing to an end months of anticipation over who would lead one of Ghana’s leading public universities.
Professor Christian Agyare is a Professor of pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical Sciences with long-standing service at KNUST. Prior to his appointment, he served as Provost of the College of Health Sciences, where he oversaw academic programmes across multiple health-related disciplines. He has also held departmental leadership positions and contributed to curriculum development, research supervision, and institutional governance.
His research work is broadly situated in pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical microbiology, with a focus on antimicrobial resistance, natural product drug discovery, and the development of therapeutic agents derived from medicinal plants. He has contributed to scholarly publications and collaborative research initiatives aimed at addressing public health and pharmaceutical challenges
The appointment of Professor Christian Agyare as Vice-Chancellor marks a new phase in KNUST’s leadership trajectory, succeeding Professor Rita Akosua Dickson’s tenure, which advanced the university’s academic and institutional profile.
