Ghana is set to expand access to condoms through the installation of condom vending machines across the country by the end of 2026, as part of renewed efforts to prevent HIV infections and other sexually transmitted infections.
The initiative is expected to make condoms more readily available, particularly in locations where people may face challenges accessing them through traditional distribution channels.
Health authorities say improving access to condoms is an important component of Ghana’s broader HIV prevention strategy, alongside public education, testing, early treatment and other interventions aimed at reducing new infections.
The introduction of vending machines is also expected to provide people with a more convenient and discreet way of obtaining condoms. This could encourage more people, particularly young adults, to access and use condoms consistently as part of safer sexual practices.
The move comes amid ongoing concerns about HIV transmission in Ghana and the need to strengthen preventive measures. Health experts have repeatedly emphasised the importance of combining education with easy access to preventive tools to reduce the spread of the virus.
Authorities are expected to work with relevant health institutions and other stakeholders to determine suitable locations for the vending machines and ensure they remain adequately stocked and accessible to the public.
