The University of Ghana Medical Centre Ltd. (UGMC) has rejected claims by Ghanaian-American comedian Michael Blackson regarding the medical care provided to his late mother, stating that some of the concerns raised publicly do not accurately reflect events at the facility.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 5, the medical centre expressed its condolences to Mr Blackson and his family following the death of his 83-year-old mother, who passed away at UGMC on July 16, 2026.
UGMC said it takes concerns from patients and their relatives seriously and had reviewed the issues raised by Mr Blackson through its clinical and administrative procedures.
However, the facility said its assessment showed that several of the claims made by the comedian on social media contained inaccuracies.
“The facts presented by Mr. Blackson on social media contain numerous inaccuracies and do not accurately reflect the events that transpired in the provision of medical care to his 83-year-old mother,” the statement said.
According to UGMC, Mr Blackson’s mother was referred to the facility from a peripheral hospital and received medical care from May 27 to July 16, 2026, a period of approximately eight weeks.
The Centre, however, declined to disclose details of her diagnosis, treatment or medical records, citing its duty to maintain patient confidentiality even after a patient’s death.
“Out of respect for the dignity of the deceased and the privacy of her family, we will not disclose or discuss in the public domain the details of any patient’s diagnosis, treatment, medical records, or account of care,” it stated.
UGMC maintained that all medical decisions at the facility are made by qualified healthcare professionals in accordance with established medical standards and with the best interests of patients in mind.
It added that such decisions are taken in consultation with authorised family representatives where necessary.
The medical centre also addressed reports of an alleged physical altercation involving Mr Blackson’s sister and a staff member, noting that the matter has been referred to the appropriate law enforcement authorities.
UGMC said it would not comment further on the incident while investigations remain ongoing.
The facility further stated that it remains open to engaging with the family privately through the appropriate channels and assured that any specific allegations of staff misconduct would be investigated and, where necessary, referred to the relevant bodies.
It also encouraged members of the public with concerns about services received at the facility to contact its Client Services team for review and resolution.
