Poor drainage worsens congestion after hours of rainfall in Accra

Heavy rainfall in parts of Accra on Thursday caused significant traffic disruption, leaving major roads heavily congested and slowing movement across several sections of the capital.

The downpour, which followed hours of intense rain, left portions of key routes waterlogged, forcing motorists to reduce speed or come to a complete standstill in some areas. Traffic quickly built up, particularly during peak commuting hours as residents travelled to and from work.

Some commuters were left stranded for extended periods as vehicles struggled to navigate flooded stretches of road. In several locations, overflowing gutters and inadequate drainage systems worsened the situation, further slowing traffic flow.

The disruption once again underscores Accra’s recurring vulnerability to flooding during heavy rainfall, with even short periods of rain continuing to significantly affect transportation and daily economic activity across the city.
