Several Ghanaian footballers, including Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew, remain without clubs following the closure of the transfer window in most major European leagues.
Ayew became a free agent after his contract with Leicester City expired at the end of last season, leaving the forward searching for a new club.
His elder brother, André Ayew, is also unattached after Dutch side NAC Breda opted not to extend his short-term contract. The former Black Stars captain joined the club in December last year and helped it in its battle against relegation.
Former Black Stars midfielder Mubarak Wakaso has also been without a club since leaving the Chinese Super League in January 2024.
Goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott is another Ghanaian free agent following the expiration of his contract with English side Crawley Town.
Former Celta Vigo defender Joseph Aidoo became a free agent in July after ending a seven-year spell with the Spanish club.
Midfielder Majeed Ashimeru has also parted ways with Belgian side Anderlecht after the two parties agreed to terminate his contract, ending his five-year association with the club.
Other Ghanaian players currently without clubs include Hakim Sulemana, Tariq Fosu-Henry, Kwabena Owusu and Joselpho Barnes.
Despite the closure of transfer windows in several major European leagues, the players still have opportunities to secure new clubs in countries where the transfer window remains open.
Turkey’s transfer window is scheduled to close on September 4, while Portugal’s remains open until September 15.
In Saudi Arabia, clubs have until October 12 to complete signings.
Players who are unattached can also join clubs after transfer windows close in some leagues, subject to the applicable squad registration rules.
The remaining transfer opportunities could therefore provide the Ghanaian free agents with additional options as they seek to continue their professional careers.
