The Ministry of Health has summoned the Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to explain reports that the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Centre is unable to admit new patients.
In a letter dated June 3, 2026, and signed by the Chief Director of the Ministry, Desmond Boateng, the Ministry said it had taken note of a statement circulating on social media under the caption: “KATH Accident and Emergency Centre Full and Unable to Admit New Cases – Management.”
According to the letter, the Head of Public Affairs of KATH was also heard on Channel One TV News affirming the hospital management’s decision regarding the inability of the emergency centre to admit additional cases.
The Ministry described the reported position as being contrary to a directive by President John Dramani Mahama that hospitals should not turn away emergency cases.
As a result, the KATH CEO has been directed to appear before the Minister of Health on or before 12:00 noon on Thursday, June 4, 2026, to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against him for allegedly contradicting the President’s directive.
“We count on your cooperation,” the letter stated.
The development comes amid growing public concern over capacity pressures at major referral hospitals and access to emergency healthcare services in the country.
