The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, said funding has been secured for the construction of a 500-bed children’s hospital at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, as Ghana seeks to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and expand specialist medical services.
The traditional ruler announced the project during a meeting with officials from the Ministry of Health, who paid a courtesy call to discuss healthcare delivery and public health preparedness, including measures to prevent and respond to potential Ebola outbreaks.
King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II said discussions with the management and board of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital had resulted in the allocation of five acres of land for the proposed facility.
“We contacted the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital because they have a vast land on the right side of the hospital when you enter. So they gave us five acres of that land to see if we could design something for a 500-bed children’s hospital,” he said.
The Ga Mantse said investors had been secured for the project following extensive engagements and planning.
“I have been able to bring in investors and we have put in a lot of work. We have met with the board of the hospital and we are eager to put this project into action,” he added.
The proposed hospital is expected to complement services at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana’s largest referral and teaching hospital, by expanding access to specialised paediatric care.
Officials from the Ministry of Health welcomed the initiative, citing its potential contribution to the country’s healthcare system.
Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, commended the Ga Mantse for supporting healthcare development and said the ministry would engage further to obtain additional details on the project.
