The sister of deceased engineer, Charles Henry Amissah, has filed a GH¢20 million lawsuit against three major health facilities, several medical professionals and the Attorney General over what she describes as negligence that led to her brother’s death following a road accident in Accra.
Dr. Matilda Amissah, a medical doctor and administratrix of the late engineer’s estate, filed the suit at the General Jurisdiction Division of the High Court in Accra after the February 2026 incident, which reignited public concern over Ghana’s recurring “No Bed Syndrome.”
The defendants named in the suit include the Ghana Police Hospital, Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, doctors and nurses attached to the facilities, as well as the Attorney General’s Department.
According to the statement of claim, 29-year-old Charles Henry Amissah, an Electronic and Automation Engineer with Promasidor Ghana Limited, was knocked down in a hit-and-run accident on the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Overpass at about 10:30 p.m. on February 6, 2026.
Court documents indicate that after he failed to return home, family members reported him missing at the Adentan Police Station. Four days later, officers from the Nima Police Station reportedly informed the family that an unidentified accident victim had been sent to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital mortuary.
Dr. Amissah told the court that upon arriving at the mortuary, the family discovered the body outside the cold room in a decomposing state and infested with maggots.
The writ further alleges that personnel from the National Ambulance Service initially transported the injured engineer to the Ghana Police Hospital after responding to a distress call. However, medical staff at the facility allegedly informed the ambulance team that there were no available beds.
According to the plaintiff, ambulance personnel pleaded with staff to provide at least emergency first aid because the victim was bleeding heavily, but no stabilisation treatment was administered.
The suit also claims the victim was later transferred to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital at Ridge, where another request for urgent medical care was allegedly rejected due to lack of bed space.
The ambulance team eventually proceeded to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where the plaintiff alleges medical personnel again failed to provide immediate treatment despite appeals from paramedics to attend to the patient while he remained on the stretcher.
The court filing states that Charles Henry Amissah later suffered cardiac arrest at about 12:50 a.m. and was pronounced dead at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
