Lordina Mahama Assures Makola Traders Over Market Redevelopment

The First Lady of Ghana, Lordina Mahama, has assured traders at the 31st December Makola Market that planned demolition and redevelopment works will be undertaken with sensitivity to their livelihoods, amid growing concerns over possible displacement.

The intervention follows protests and a petition to President John Dramani Mahama from traders, who raised concerns over plans by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to demolish parts of the market without first providing alternative trading spaces.

Traders say the move could disrupt business at one of Accra’s busiest commercial centres and threaten their main source of income.

Addressing the traders on behalf of the First Lady, Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey said government would ensure a consultative process.

“I came here on the instructions of Her Excellency Mrs Lordina Mahama… the traders are not against redevelopment, but are concerned about how it will affect their livelihoods. We will sit down and make progress without emotion,” she said.

She added that discussions were ongoing with city authorities, including the mayor, to reach a mutually acceptable arrangement.

The Makola Market remains a key trading hub in the capital, supporting thousands of traders who depend on it for daily income, school fees and household needs.
