The Chief Executive of RuffTown Records, Ricky Nana Agyeman, has revealed that he recently paid $100,000 to the father of late Ghanaian musician Ebony Reigns as part of the artiste’s music royalties.
Speaking in an interview on Okay FM, Agyeman, popularly known as Bullet, said the payment represented 50% of Ebony’s royalties, despite an earlier agreement allocating the singer a 20% share.
“I recently gave Ebony’s father $100,000, which is 50% of Ebony’s royalties,” Bullet said.
“Ebony was entitled to 20% shares, but her father made me increase it to 50%,” he added.
According to Bullet, Ebony’s father requested greater control over the artiste’s earnings following her death in 2018.
He said funds initially intended for promoting Ebony’s music and campaigns were later withdrawn and handed over to the family after discussions with her father.
Bullet also said he had largely refrained from publicly discussing the arrangement despite ongoing criticism from Ebony’s father, with whom he has had a strained relationship since the singer’s death.
The disagreements between the two parties have periodically played out publicly and centred on royalties, management issues and the handling of the late artiste’s legacy.
Ebony Reigns, born Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng, died in a road accident on the Sunyani-Kumasi highway on February 8, 2018, at the age of 20.
She rose to prominence in Ghana’s music industry with hit songs including Sponsor, Kupe, Maame Hwɛ and Poison, and remains one of the country’s most celebrated female musicians.
