DVLA introduces six local languages for driving theory tests

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has introduced six Ghanaian languages on its computer-based driving theory test platform to help applicants who have difficulty reading or writing in English.

Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey, announced the initiative at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, October 12, 2026.

The languages available on the platform are Twi, Ga, Ewe, Dagbani, Nzema and Hausa.

Mr Kotey said the initiative forms part of efforts to make driver licensing more accessible and ensure applicants understand road signs, traffic regulations and safe driving practices before obtaining their licences.

He added that the Authority was working to introduce more local languages to enable additional applicants across the country to take the mandatory theory examination in languages they understand.

Beyond the language initiative, the DVLA has introduced SMS notifications to remind licence holders of upcoming renewal deadlines.

According to Mr Kotey, customers receive an initial reminder one month before their licences expire and another two weeks before the expiry date, provided their registered mobile numbers remain unchanged.

He said the Authority was also developing a similar notification system to alert vehicle owners when their roadworthiness certificates are due for renewal.

Other measures being introduced to improve service delivery include an electronic library and a queue management system at DVLA offices.
