Carlos Queiroz Sacked as Black Stars Coach after back-to-back AFCON qualifying defeats

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz have mutually agreed to terminate their working relationship following Ghana’s disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The decision was announced on Thursday, October 1, after discussions between the GFA and the Portuguese coach following Ghana’s opening two qualifying matches.

The Black Stars suffered consecutive defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia, leaving them at the bottom of their qualifying group without a point.

In a statement, Queiroz confirmed that both parties had agreed to end his service agreement, citing the circumstances surrounding the team and its recent performances.

“Following discussions held in a spirit of mutual respect, the Ghana Football Association and I have mutually agreed to terminate the Service Agreement governing my role as Head Coach of the Ghana National Team, the Black Stars,” he said.

Queiroz described the decision as difficult but said both parties considered it the most appropriate step in the interest of Ghanaian football.

He also acknowledged that despite the commitment and efforts of his technical team, the necessary conditions for achieving their objectives had not been fully established.

The Portuguese coach thanked the GFA, its president, his technical staff and the players for their support during his time in charge.

He urged Ghanaians to continue supporting the Black Stars players, expressing confidence in their talent and potential.

“Believe in these players. Protect them. Support them,” he said, adding that unity and the right environment could help the current generation achieve success.

Queiroz also expressed gratitude to Ghanaian supporters for their passion and warmth, saying he would always remember his time with the national team with respect and affection.

His departure leaves the Black Stars facing uncertainty over their technical leadership as they seek to revive their 2027 AFCON qualification campaign.
