Ghana’s new Electronic Visa (E-Visa) system has recorded more than 1,000 applications from travellers across 78 countries within its first month of operation.
The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka-Mubarak, disclosed this when Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang visited the Ministry on Monday, July 13.
He described the response to the platform as a major achievement in government’s efforts to modernise Ghana’s visa application process and make travelling to the country more convenient.
According to the Minister, the online system has allowed applicants to complete the visa process remotely without having to visit Ghanaian embassies or consulates.
“with the E-Visa that was graciously launched by His Excellency the President on the 25th of May, in just one month we were able to get almost close to 1,500 applicants applying to come to our country from 78 countries across the globe just by going online and getting their visa,” he said.
Mr Muntaka-Mubarak also revealed that other services under the Ministry of the Interior, including applications involving the Narcotics Control Commission and cannabis-related conventions, have been moved online as part of efforts to improve efficiency and access to government services.
The E-Visa platform enables travellers to submit applications, make payments and receive approved visas electronically, reducing the need for physical visits to diplomatic missions.
The system was launched by President John Dramani Mahama on May 25 as part of measures to streamline entry procedures into Ghana. During the launch, the President announced that African passport holders travelling to Ghana for business purposes would use the online platform and would not be required to pay visa fees.
