Cabinet will meet on today May 14 to consider recommendations submitted by the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC), as the government moves toward defining its position on proposed reforms to the country’s 1992 Constitution.
The special Cabinet session is expected to be chaired by President John Dramani Mahama and will focus on a draft government position paper prepared after consultations and legal review by the Attorney-General and the President’s legal team.
Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu said the review process ordered by the President had been completed, clearing the way for Cabinet deliberations on the proposals.
“So Thursday, 14th May, there will be a special Cabinet session chaired by the President himself to consider the draft position paper,” Kwakye Ofosu said in an interview with Joy News.
According to him, the meeting will enable Cabinet to determine the government’s official stance on the recommendations contained in the constitutional review exercise.
Kwakye Ofosu said the constitutional review process differs from a commission of inquiry because it does not require a white paper, but rather a position paper outlining the government’s response to the recommendations.
He said the document would be made public after Cabinet approval to allow citizens to understand the government’s position on the proposed constitutional reforms.
The spokesperson added that the next phase would involve implementation measures, including the possible establishment of an implementation committee.
He said the recommendations would not be treated uniformly, noting that some proposals could be accepted fully, others amended, while some may be rejected based on feasibility and practicality.
Kwakye Ofosu also indicated that although the constitutional review report would dominate discussions, Cabinet could consider other matters during the special sitting.
The government, he said, would continue engaging the public after Cabinet concludes deliberations on the proposals.
