A majority of delegates of Ghana’s governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) want Johnson Asiedu Nketia to remain the party’s national chairman, according to a new poll by research firm Global InfoAnalytics.
The survey found that 61% of delegates support calls for Asiedu Nketia to continue in the role, while 26% oppose the idea and 13% expressed no opinion.
The findings mark an increase from an April 2026 poll, when 42% of delegates backed his continued leadership and 39% were opposed.
The survey also examined delegates’ views on the party’s potential presidential candidate for the 2028 elections.
According to the poll, 58% of respondents support Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson becoming the NDC’s presidential candidate to contest the 2028 election against the New Patriotic Party’s expected flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. Twenty-three percent opposed the proposal, while 19% were undecided.
The poll suggests Ato Forson’s potential candidacy enjoys support beyond his immediate political base. Among delegates who currently favour Asiedu Nketia in the party’s presidential race, 25% also said they would support Ato Forson as the NDC’s candidate for the 2028 general election.
The findings indicate that while Asiedu Nketia retains strong backing to continue leading the party’s organisational affairs, the race to succeed President John Dramani Mahama as the NDC’s next presidential candidate remains open.
Global InfoAnalytics said it conducted the survey between July 8 and July 14, interviewing 5,637 NDC delegates across Ghana’s 16 regions using Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews (CATI).
The research firm said the poll has a 99% confidence level and a margin of error of plus or minus 1.7 percentage points.
