President John Dramani Mahama has cautioned that Ghana’s economic recovery will not be sustainable unless it is anchored on integrity, discipline and strong moral values.
Speaking at the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving on Tuesday, July 1, President Mahama said although the country has made significant economic progress, lasting national development requires a renewed commitment to ethical values.
“Economic transformation without moral transformation cannot endure. Prosperity without integrity is fragile. Development without discipline is unsustainable. And growth without justice leaves too many people behind,” he said.
The President noted that the theme for this year’s observance, “Resetting Our Values to Build the Ghana We Want,” highlights the need for Ghanaians to embrace honesty, accountability, patriotism, compassion and mutual respect.
According to him, while governments can introduce policies and reforms, they cannot legislate values such as integrity and honesty.
“These values begin with each one of us,” he said, adding that teachers, health workers, journalists, farmers, parents and public servants all have a responsibility to contribute to national development through their conduct.
President Mahama urged public officials to carry out their duties with honesty and avoid corruption, while encouraging journalists to uphold truth and parents to instil discipline and good values in their children.
He stressed that Ghana’s progress would not be determined solely by infrastructure projects or economic reforms but by the daily decisions citizens make in their homes, workplaces and communities.
“The Ghana we seek will be built by the millions of ordinary Ghanaians who make the right choices every day to do what is right,” he stated.
President Mahama also said the country’s recent economic recovery, achieved through disciplined fiscal management and responsible leadership, must now be safeguarded through justice and strengthened by national unity.
“Our economic recovery has been built upon discipline. It must now be sustained by integrity. It must be protected by justice, and it must be strengthened by our national unity,” he added.
He called on Ghanaians to make the principles promoted during the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving a lasting national commitment, stressing that ethical leadership and responsible citizenship are essential to building a stronger and more prosperous Ghana.
