President John Dramani Mahama has authorised the immediate release of GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund to support emergency relief and flood mitigation efforts following severe flooding in parts of Accra and other communities in southern Ghana.
In a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the presidency said the funds were approved in response to hours of heavy rainfall that inundated several communities, affecting residents and damaging property.
According to the statement, GH¢150 million will be used to provide emergency assistance to flood victims and affected communities, while the remaining GH¢150 million will finance measures aimed at reducing the risk of future flooding.
Mahama also directed the deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to support the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other emergency agencies in ongoing rescue and relief operations.
The presidency said the president earlier conducted an aerial assessment of the flood-affected areas to evaluate the extent of the damage before announcing the emergency funding and additional response measures.
The government said the interventions are intended to provide immediate support to affected communities while strengthening long-term efforts to reduce the impact of recurring floods in southern Ghana.
