John Boadu has been elected National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the party’s National Delegates Conference held in Kumasi.
The former NPP General Secretary won the closely contested election conducted on Saturday, October 3, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, defeating three other contenders for the position.
Mr Boadu secured 2,888 votes to emerge victorious ahead of former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, who obtained 2,048 votes, while former National Chairman Paul Afoko polled 490 votes. Former Greater Accra Regional Chairman Sammy Crabbe was also in the race.
Supporters of Mr Boadu celebrated at the congress grounds after the declaration of results.
His victory follows a last-minute alliance with Mr Crabbe, who announced on the day of the election that he was throwing his support behind Mr Boadu and urged delegates to vote for him.
The chairmanship election formed part of the NPP’s exercise to elect nine national officers during the conference, which attracted more than 7,000 delegates from across the country.
The elections were held after delegates considered and approved amendments to the party’s constitution, including changes relating to the position of party leader while the NPP is in opposition.
Mr Boadu, who served as the party’s General Secretary between 2018 and 2022, is expected to lead the party’s organisational restructuring efforts as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.
