President John Mahama is expected to receive the cleared right-of-way for the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway on Monday, September 14, marking a major step towards the construction of the long-awaited road project.
The Ghana Armed Forces has cleared a 175.6-kilometre stretch of the right-of-way, paving the way for work on the proposed 198.7-kilometre Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu said the formal handover by engineers of the Ghana Armed Forces to the government will take place at Kwaso, near Ejisu.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, September 13, Ofosu said President Mahama would preside over the ceremony.
“Tomorrow, President Mahama will preside over the formal handover of the 175.6km right-of-way clearance by Engineers of the Ghana Armed Forces to the Government of Ghana at Kwaso, near Ejisu,” he said.
A right-of-way refers to land legally acquired and reserved for the construction, operation, maintenance and possible future expansion of a road or highway.
The government says the clearance removes a major obstacle to the commencement of construction works on the expressway.
Ofosu described the Accra-Kumasi Expressway as the single largest capital investment by any government in Ghana’s history.
The project is expected to improve road connectivity between the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions and facilitate the movement of people and goods along one of the country’s key economic corridors.
The formal handover of the cleared right-of-way is expected to mark a significant milestone in efforts to advance the project, which is intended to improve transport links between Ghana’s two major economic centres.
