The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has attributed the widespread power outages recorded across parts of the country on Thursday, August 20, 2026, to a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line.
GRIDCo said the fault occurred at about 4:30 a.m., triggering the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units as well as some thermal power plants.
According to the company, the automatic shutdown was activated by the power system’s protection mechanisms to safeguard the stability and integrity of the National Interconnected Transmission System.
The incident disrupted electricity supply to several parts of the country, including communities in Accra and other regions.
GRIDCo said its engineers, working with other power sector agencies, immediately began efforts to isolate the affected transmission line and safely restore the power system.
The company noted that power supply had already been restored to some affected areas, while restoration efforts continued in communities that remained without electricity.
It said all relevant technical teams had been mobilised and were working to achieve full restoration as quickly and safely as possible.
GRIDCo apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused by the disruption and assured the public that it would provide further updates as restoration efforts progressed.
The company also appealed to affected customers for their patience and cooperation as technical teams worked to restore normal power supply across the affected areas.
