Dennis Miracles Aboagye, communications director for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential campaign, said his recent detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has strengthened his resolve to pursue the party’s top communications role.
Aboagye was arrested by EOCO as part of investigations into the alleged misappropriation of about GH¢55 million at the Secretariat of the Institute of Management and Community Development (IMCCoD).
EOCO said the investigation also involves the institute’s former accountant, Gerald Appiah, over alleged financial and procurement-related irregularities.
In a statement issued on July 13, EOCO said the probe followed a petition by the current Executive Secretary of IMCCoD requesting further investigations into a forensic audit covering the period from Aug. 1, 2022, to Feb. 2, 2025.
The anti-graft agency said the investigation, which began last year after an initial forensic audit, is focused on the suspected misappropriation, misapplication, diversion and theft of public funds amounting to about GH¢55 million.
In his first public comments since his release, Aboagye said the experience had reinforced rather than diminished his commitment to the opposition party.
“If the intention was to break me, it has failed. If the intention was to scare me, it has failed spectacularly,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
Aboagye had recently announced his intention to contest for the position of NPP National Communications Director before his arrest.
His detention drew protests from some party supporters, who accused the government of attempting to intimidate a prominent opposition figure.
Aboagye said the support he received during his detention strengthened his determination to continue serving the party.
“You did not just defend Dennis Miracles Aboagye; you defended the principle that no voice can be intimidated into silence,” he said.
He thanked his legal team, the NPP leadership and supporters for standing by him, saying the experience had deepened his resolve to lead the party’s communications agenda as it prepares for future political contests.
EOCO has not announced any charges against Aboagye, and investigations into the alleged financial irregularities are ongoing.
