Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, has confirmed that no Ghanaian national remains in detention following recent anti-immigration protests and related security operations in parts of South Africa.
The assurance comes after tensions increased during demonstrations linked to concerns over undocumented migrants, with some foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, affected by the developments.
According to the High Commissioner, some Ghanaians were temporarily picked up during immigration enforcement operations, but the Ghana High Commission engaged with South African authorities to verify their identities and secure their release.
He explained that the mission has been closely monitoring the situation and continues to prioritise the safety and welfare of Ghanaian citizens living in South Africa.
The protests have also led to voluntary repatriation efforts, with hundreds of Ghanaians returning home amid concerns over rising tensions and immigration-related challenges in South Africa.
The Ghana High Commission has advised citizens in South Africa to remain calm, avoid protest areas, carry valid identification documents, and follow safety guidelines as authorities work to manage the situation.
The development comes as South African authorities continue to address concerns around irregular migration while urging communities to maintain peace and avoid actions that could endanger foreign nationals.
