Ghana’s Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has urged residents of Accra to work from home after overnight rains triggered widespread flooding, disrupted traffic and brought parts of the capital to a standstill.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, the minister warned that conditions could worsen as more rainfall is expected.
“Based on what the Meteorological Department is telling us, we expect it to be heavier if the prediction of more rains from Togo gets here, so please, stay home, work from home,” he said.
Muntaka advised workers who had already arrived at their workplaces to remain there until conditions improved, while those yet to leave home should work remotely where possible.
He also called on public and private sector employers to activate flexible work arrangements to minimise disruption while ensuring business continuity.
“Private and public meetings that are not too urgent, we can have them on Zoom, and those that are very urgent, we can postpone them,” he said.
The appeal comes as emergency responders continue to deal with flooded roads and severe traffic congestion across the capital following the heavy rains.
Muntaka commended the efforts of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Navy, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service and other emergency responders, urging closer coordination among agencies responding to the flooding.
“If a call comes to the National Fire Service and you think it is something you need to link them to NADMO, don’t say this is not for us… please let us work together, let us operationalise the thing as one unit,” he said.
