The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has begun efforts to repair strained relations with former Assin Central lawmaker Kennedy Ohene Agyapong following months of internal tensions that have exposed divisions within the party.
Former Majority Leader and newly appointed Chief of Staff to the party’s flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, said reconciliation efforts were already underway, signalling a renewed push to restore unity ahead of the next general election.
“The leadership of the NPP are taking steps to re-engage Hon. Ken Agyapong,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said, adding that party leadership was committed to resolving internal disagreements that have persisted since the party’s presidential primaries last year.
His comments come amid rising concern over cracks within the opposition party, fuelled by repeated public criticism from Agyapong, who has openly expressed dissatisfaction with some senior figures.
Tensions were further highlighted last weekend when Agyapong declared on his private television station, Net 2 TV, that he would not share campaign platforms with Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, former Minister Sarah Adwoa Safo and other party stalwarts.
Agyapong, who contested the NPP flagbearership, has accused some party figures of undermining his presidential bid, allegations that have been denied by Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
The former MP has also warned of deeper revelations, saying in a recent interview that he holds information that could affect the NPP’s chances in the 2028 elections, and vowed to disclose them next year.
He further alleged corruption in the government’s Agenda 111 hospital project, claiming contracts were inflated and awarded to political cronies, allegations which have not been independently verified.
Speaking on Kumasi-based Pure FM, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said internal disagreements were common after electoral contests but stressed the need for dialogue and unity as the party rebuilds following its 2024 election defeat.
“The leadership of the NPP are taking steps to re-engage Hon Ken Agyapong,” he reiterated, expressing confidence that Agyapong remained an important member of the party despite recent tensions.
