Semenyo Urges Black Stars to Stay Focused Ahead of England Clash

Black Stars forward Antoine Semenyo has warned against complacency after Ghana’s dramatic victory over Panama, insisting the team must remain focused as they prepare for a crucial FIFA World Cup clash against England.

Ghana opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Panama at BMO Field in Toronto on Wednesday. Caleb Yirenkyi’s stoppage-time strike secured all three points for the Black Stars and ended a six-match winless run.

While the victory has boosted confidence within the Ghana camp, Semenyo believes the team cannot afford to get carried away with the result, especially with one of the tournament favourites waiting in their next fixture.

The Manchester City attacker, who was named Man of the Match for his influential display against Panama, acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge that lies ahead but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to compete.

“We know it’s going to be a tough game,” Semenyo said when asked about the upcoming encounter with England.

“We are not going to be ahead of ourselves. We want to win that game, but we know it’s not going to be easy.”

The 25-year-old was one of Ghana’s standout performers in the opening match, using his pace, strength and movement to trouble the Panamanian defence throughout the contest.

His comments reflect the cautious optimism within the Black Stars camp as head coach Carlos Queiroz and his players continue preparations for what could prove to be a decisive fixture in Group L.

Ghana currently sit second in the group following their opening victory, with England occupying top spot after defeating Croatia 4-2 in their first game of the tournament.

The Black Stars will face the Three Lions at Gillette Stadium on June 23 in a match that could significantly shape the race for qualification to the knockout stages.

Despite England’s status as one of the tournament favourites, Ghana will draw confidence from their resilient performance against Panama and the growing belief within the squad under Queiroz.

For Semenyo, however, the focus remains on maintaining concentration and ensuring the team continues to improve with each game.
