Police Arrest Suspect in Murder of UCC Student Innocentia Avinu

Ghana police have arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the murder of a University of Cape Coast (UCC) student whose death has drawn widespread public attention.

The suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was arrested on Sunday evening at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast by a special team from the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Unit following what authorities described as intelligence-led operations.

Police said preliminary investigations indicate that Mensah allegedly picked up 20-year-old Innocentia Atsufui Avinu from Ayensu Plaza within the UCC hostel enclave on June 11 at about 6:48 p.m.

According to investigators, the suspect subsequently transported the student to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen before her body was later discovered.

Mensah, who reportedly claims to be a teacher and also works as a driver, is assisting police with investigations.

The arrest marks a significant development in the probe into the death of Avinu, which has sparked concern among students, residents and the wider public.

Police have not disclosed further details regarding the circumstances of the killing but said investigations are ongoing.
