Suppliers threaten protest over delayed GH¢50m Free SHS debts

The National Association of Institutional Suppliers (NAIS) says it will stage a picketing exercise at Ghana’s Ministry of Education on June 11, 2026, over an outstanding debt of about 50 million Ghana cedis ($3.3 million) owed to its members.

In a statement signed by President Emmanuel Ayivor and Assistant Secretary Ruth Kodua, the association said the planned protest follows years of unsuccessful attempts to secure payment for goods supplied under the government’s Free Senior High School programme.

NAIS said its members had not been paid since 2023 for the supply of school uniforms, house dresses and other essential clothing items to public senior high schools across the country.

“Since 2023, NAIS members have not received payments totalling approximately 50 million Ghana cedis for services rendered,” the statement said.

The association said the delay in payment had placed significant financial strain on suppliers, many of whom were struggling to sustain their businesses.

“Despite numerous engagements and appeals to the relevant authorities, the issue remains unresolved,” it said, adding that the situation had caused severe hardship for members and threatened continued service delivery to schools.

NAIS said the planned picketing was intended to draw attention to the matter and push for the release of the funds.

“The demonstration aims to highlight the urgency of the situation and to demand the immediate release of funds owed to our members,” the statement added.

The group called on the media to cover the protest, saying wider publicity would help ensure the issue receives attention from key stakeholders.

NAIS expressed hope that the demonstration would prompt swift government intervention and lead to payment of the outstanding arrears.
