The Government of Ghana has unveiled a special support package for citizens expected to return from South Africa following ongoing xenophobic attacks in parts of the country.
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced that the intervention is intended to assist evacuees with their reintegration and general wellbeing upon arrival in Ghana.
According to the minister, the package includes a “Welcome Home Financial Package,” transportation support to various parts of the country, and a reintegration allowance to help returnees settle back into life in Ghana.
Mr. Ablakwa added that affected persons will also receive free psychosocial support services to help them deal with trauma and emotional distress resulting from the attacks and displacement.
He further disclosed that returnees would be enrolled into a special national database that will connect them to employment opportunities and support for start-up businesses.
The government’s intervention follows growing concerns over xenophobic violence targeting foreign nationals in South Africa, which has created fear and uncertainty among many African migrants, including Ghanaians.
Government says the measures form part of broader efforts to ensure the safe return and successful reintegration of affected citizens while reaffirming its commitment to protecting the welfare of Ghanaians living abroad.
“We value and cherish all our citizens,” the Foreign Affairs Minister stated.
The evacuation exercise also comes amid intensified diplomatic discussions regarding the safety and protection of Ghanaians residing in South Africa.
