More than 500,000 final-year Senior High School students across Ghana are set to begin this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), starting with the Oral English paper, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) said.
The 2026 examination marks Ghana’s return to the regional WASSCE system alongside other West African countries after several years of administering separate examinations following disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
WAEC said it had completed preparations for the nationwide exams and introduced measures aimed at protecting the integrity of the process.
John Kapi, WAEC’s head of public affairs, said the council delayed the printing of examination papers as part of efforts to prevent leaks and curb malpractice.
“In terms of preparations, I think we are very much on course,” Kapi said in an interview on Tuesday. “For security reasons, we delayed the printing of the exam papers because we don’t want the papers out there early to prevent the activities of those who want to compromise the integrity of the exams.”
Kapi said examination materials for all centres across the country were ready and would be distributed according to schedule.
“For every institution, what they need for the exams is ready,” he said. “We are very sure that we will be within time so we will work with the timetable that we have brought out.”
The WASSCE is the main secondary school-leaving examination used for admission into tertiary institutions across West Africa.
