The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Baba Jamal, has pledged financial support for traders affected by a recent fire outbreak at the Nima Market in Accra.
Speaking to journalists after visiting the scene of the incident, Baba Jamal said he would provide GH¢5,000 each to affected traders as interim support to help them rebuild their businesses following the destruction caused by the fire.
The blaze, which swept through sections of the market, destroyed goods and property, leaving several traders counting losses. Local authorities, including officials from the Municipal Chief Executive’s office and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), responded to the incident.
“Some serious devastation has taken place,” Baba Jamal said during the visit.
“I want to send my heartfelt sympathies to the people who have lost their wares and to all the people in this market,” he added.
The lawmaker also appealed to the government and President John Dramani Mahama to support victims and assist in rebuilding efforts.
He further called for the construction of an ultra-modern market facility in the constituency, arguing that improved infrastructure and better trading conditions could help reduce the risk of future fire outbreaks.
“I call on the government, our president, and the entire nation to come and assist in these difficult times,” he said.
Market fires are a recurring challenge in parts of Ghana, often raising concerns about infrastructure deficits, overcrowding, electrical faults and inadequate fire prevention systems in major trading centres.
